Design West, San Jose, CA, April 23, 2013 — Express Logic, Inc., the worldwide leader in royalty-free, real-time operating systems (RTOS), celebrates its leading contribution to the Internet of Things as it exceeds 1.5 billion deployments. Express Logic’s focus on small footprint, high performance, and royalty-free licensing established ThreadX as a match for connected devices years ago. The company’s continued focus on high throughput, communications middleware, and fast time-to-market has led to a rapidly expanding use of ThreadX in all types of connected devices.

Express Logic’s ThreadX RTOS is a small, fast, royalty-free RTOS that provides priority-based premptive scheduling, optimized context switching, and an intuitive, easy-to-use API. ThreadX has been deployed in products such as consumer electronics, medical devices, and industrial-control systems where low overhead, high-performance, and rock-solid reliability are essential. These widespread deployments in market-leading products demonstrate the outstanding reliability and exceptional quality of ThreadX.

ThreadX® RTOS Deployments Dominate Wireless Connected Devices

Express Logic’s ThreadX RTOS has been deployed in more than 1.5 billion units, marked by a dominance in products that incorporate wireless connectivity. Many of these products offer Bluetooth, Baseband, and WiFi radio SoCs where ThreadX is an integral part of the SoC-based subsystem. Thanks to these implementations and many others, ThreadX plays a key role in the success of many wildly popular products, including Apple’s market-leading iPhone® and iPad®, HP’s market-leading inkjet printers and All-in-One devices, and many other commercial products that have to work all day, every day.

Near-Wire Speed Ensures Top Device Performance

Like ThreadX, Express Logic’s NetX™ and NetX Duo TCP/IP stacks are fine-tuned to deliver the highest performance possible. In addition to being designed for high-speed and low overhead, both NetX, which supports IPv4 networking, and NetX Duo, which supports both IPv4 and IPv6 in the same stack, take advantage of special-purpose network hardware available in a number of processor architectures. As a result, NetX has achieved near-wire speed on many processors, including Sony’s Cell BE and ARM Cortex-based processors from Freescale, STMicroelectronics, Atmel, and Xilinx.

“The Ethernet throughput achieved by Express Logic’s NextX Duo stack on the Zynq-7000 All Programmable SoC is outstanding. The Zynq-7000 All Programmable SoC architecture was designed to enable the highest Ethernet throughput, and the NetX Duo performance results validate many of our architectural choices,” said Xilinx Director of Processing Technical Marketing Greg Brown. “Ethernet is ubiquitous, and the NetX Duo stack offers a very appealing solution for many of the applications that the Zynq-7000 devices serve.”

Rather than using an RTOS-independent interface layer like many TCP/IP stacks on the market today, NetX avoids processing overhead through tight integration with Express Logic’s ThreadX RTOS. As a result, NetX typically achieves near-wire speeds while consuming less than 50% CPU utilization. With more than half of the CPU’s processing cycles available for use by other application code, products are able to offer additional performance, functionality, and features.

Developer and Time-to-Market Focused

To better assist developers in using ThreadX and NetX in new product designs in medical, industrial, and consumer electronics, Express Logic has amassed nearly 100 free demo downloads for quick-start evaluation and development. These demos support today’s most popular 32-bit processor architectures, including the ARM Cortex-M3 and M4, as well as platforms from AMD, ADI, Altera, ARC, Microchip, MIPS, Renesas, Tensilica, and Xilinx.

“Express Logic’s focus on the developer has resulted in ThreadX consistently achieving a higher percentage of on-time project completions than any of its competitors,” noted Dr. Jerry Krasner, Principal Analyst, Embedded Market Forecasters. “Our annual survey of embedded systems developers asks “Which RTOS did you use in your last project?” and “Was that project completed on-time, ahead-of-schedule, or late?” For the sixth consecutive year, projects that used Express Logic’s ThreadX RTOS had a higher percentage of on-time completions than any of its competitors.”

“In designing ThreadX and its related middleware, I wanted to keep things simple, easy to use, and as efficient as possible,” stated William E. Lamie, President of Express Logic. “The more than 1.5 billion deployments in market-leading products attests that Express Logic’s products consistently exceed the norm in time-to-market, network throughput, and innovative design. As we continue to build our product and partner portfolio, and add certifications like the SGS-TÜV, I expect ThreadX will continue to prove itself in many more implementations across a variety of market sectors.”

Demonstrations of Express Logic’s ThreadX RTOS, TraceX Event Analysis Tool, NetX TCP/IP Stack, and USBX USB Host/Device/OTG Stack, can be viewed at Express Logic’s booth, #1328, at Design West (ESC), San Jose, CA, April 23-25.
